SPECIAL PROJECT: LUISINI'S WINERY
Background
The place known as Luisini's Winery is located on the shore of Lake Goolellal in the City of Joondalup. It is an historic site which is to be transferred to the National Trust from the WA Planning Commission for the purpose of conservation and interpretation.
The Trust has commenced this project by involving leaders of the Italian community to assist in directing the future of this place. It is intended to recognise the contribution that Italian migrants made to Western Australia, including the many fine individuals who have helped to build this State's commerce and industry in the areas of fisheries, agriculture, fashion, culture, infrastructure development and last, but not least, food and wine.
Italians have been part of the Western Australian community since the late 1800s. Fathers, perhaps with the eldest son, would emigrate to Australia, would earn sufficient money to support families back home and to pay for the passages of family members to Western Australia. Many found on arrival that they were to be taken under the wing of one exceptional individual who would be waiting for them as they stepped off the ships that brought them: Ezio Luisini.
Commencement of the Luisini's Winery Project
In 1996, the WA Planning Commission contracted Palassis Architects to produce a Conservation Plan for the Winery site. The principle recommendation of the Plan was to classify the site and to retain the buildings as a working winery, with public access to view the various activities which could include complementary commercial uses.
Committees have been formed to focus on business development, interpretation and conservation aspects, each committee being chaired by a prominent member of the Italian community. Mr and Mrs Tom and Maria D'Orsogna have accepted the honour of being appointed the Trust's first Vice Patrons for the Luisini's Winery Project.
The National Trust appreciates the substantial commitment of the Italian community in helping the Trust to undertake this project.
Future Directions
It is envisaged the place, while being brought back into limited operation as a winery, will operate as a cultural centre. It will also have facilities for gatherings and meetings, a café/restaurant and shop, accommodation for artists in the Wanneroo community, a museum reflecting the Italian migration story and perhaps an amphitheatre will be constructed outside, overlooking the beautiful Lake Goolelal, for performances.
Through all stages, community consultation will be undertaken to inform the community and local residents of proposals and to seek feedback to ensure conflict and risk factors are minimised.
