GOVERNMENT AGAIN HIGHLIGHTS ITS LACK OF COMMITMENT TO CONSERVING WESTERN AUSTRALIA'S HERITAGE
Perth Convention Centre & Newspaper House Group of Buildings
The National Trust calls on the Government to honour its commitment to conserve the heritage precinct on Saint George's Terrace comprising Newspaper House, Royal Insurance and Public Trustees buildings, Perth Tech and the Old Perth Boys' School.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Western Australian Tourism Commission has repeatedly publicly promised the community of Western Australia, that 11 million dollars would go towards conserving these important heritage places. He also promised that this was secured in the tender process and that nothing would alter this commitment.
The only publicly available information concerning the Convention Centre now indicates that the gaping excavation on Saint George's Terrace will remain and no heritage conservation work will be undertaken. The proposed hotel and retail complex, which would have seen an acceptable, adaptive reuse of the buildings, will now be incorporated into the Convention Centre instead.
The National Trust calls upon the Government to honour its public promise by committing 11 million dollars towards conserving this nationally significant precinct.
