From the Barracks to the Burrup
The National Trust of Australia’s 50th anniversary publication, From the Barracks to the Burrup investigates the heritage battles that have shaped Perth including the fight for Barracks, the Palace Hotel, the Swan River and the Swan Brewery.
Co-authored by Dr Andrea Witcomb and Dr Kate Gregory, this publication is more than a chronicle of the major events in the Trust’s history, it provides analysis of the National Trust’s role in broader heritage issues reflecting the development of Perth over more than 50 years.
As the name suggests, From the Barracks to the Burrup also explores contemporary tensions between Aboriginal heritage and resource development, in particular the unique rock art of the Burrup Peninsula. This richy illustrated book contains never-before-published images and draws from a new oral history archive with testimonies from its founders, staff and volunteers of the organisation.
Seven years in the making, From the Barracks to the Burrup is a product of an Australian Research Council Linkage grant in which the authors collaborated with the National Trust of Australia (WA).
