Mack holds degrees and diplomas in physical education, education, maritime archaeology, a masters degree in history and a Ph.D in maritime archaeology. He is the curator responsible for the Museum's 'Site Inspection' and 'Outreach' programs and is the archaeologist responsible for the excavations of the VOC ship Zuytdorp (1702-1711) and SS Xantho (1848-1872). Responsibilities include the management of maritime archaeological sites generally, including port-related structures such as jetties, two of which he has excavated. Mack is also interested in submarine and aircraft wrecks as a developing class of maritime archaeological site. He also leads the museum's HMAS Sydney/HSK Kormoran program and recently led a team that located the sites of HM Ship Roebuck, William Dampier's famous command and the French corvette L'Uranie, of Rose and Louis de Freycinet fame.
