Donovan D Rypkema

Donovan D. Rypkema is president of Heritage Strategies International, a Washington, D.C.-based real estate and economic development-consulting firm. The firm specializes in services to public and NGO clients who are dealing with the economic aspects of historic preservation and the reuse of heritage structures. HSI, which was established in 2004, is the companion firm of PlaceEconomics, which for 25 years has provided services primarily to North American clients. Rypkema has worked with communities in 49 States, 7 Canadian Provinces and 25 countries.

In October and November 2007, Donovan visited Western Australia on the invitation by the National Trust and delivered a number of well received papers.

On an international level Rypkema has worked directly with government and business leaders in Japan on issues of downtown revitalization; public officials in Thailand regarding historic preservation challenges; citizen groups in Russia on development plans and tourism strategies and provincial officials in China on heritage preservation strategies.

He has spoken at international conferences in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. Rypkema keynoted a Study Tour on Cultural Resource Preservation and Economic Development sponsored by the World Bank and the US Park Service. He also was a participant in a US/UK symposium on military privatization efforts held in England and served as a member of the American delegation to a US/Spain Forum on Historic Preservation organized by then HUD Secretary Mel Martinez.
