Andrew Clarke

Lieut. Andrew Clarke (the third governor of Western Australia) was born in 1793 and died on the 11th February 1847 in Perth at the age of 54.

He was governor of W.A from the 26th January 1846 until his death, serving for only 12½ months.

He arrived in W.A on the 26th January 1846 on the Cumberland with wife Frances Jackson (widow) and her daughter Fanny Mary Jane Jackson (1821-1863).

He had served in the 46th regiment and in 1806 he was appointed governor of Hobart. From 1839-1844 he was governor of Saint Lucia.

Clarke believed in the education of all children, no matter their position in society. His widow sailed back to London two months after his death during April in 1847 on the Unicorn.
