- The Cemeteries -
The East Perth Cemeteries are the only surviving colonial cemeteries in a city anywhere in the world. Unfortunately the cemeteries have been through
good and bad times, during the last 170 years. They have faced the elements, neglect and
vandalism over this time.
The only support has come from voluntary organisations
such as the National Trust; who while being highly competent have limited funding to
sustain major repairs or cleanups. Thus the cemeteries must rely on the community to help,
by weeding, clearing up general rubbish and securing
the area.
The National Trust East Perth Cemeteries Project was designed as an aid to the community. The project called upon a group of students
from All Saints' College to maintain the site, and document some of the Cemeteries' history.
Over four days each year, beginning in 2007, The National Trust and All Saints' College
embarked on an historical journey through time. After having
explored the Cemeteries, the research at the
State Library of Western Australia began. They pored through
microfiche, microfilm and various other media; research was
soon completed and a website was designed. The information
about various significant people buried is now online.
