Peter Broun, son of Sir William and Annie Broun arrived in Perth on the ‘Parmelia’ with his wife and two children in 1829. He became the Secretary of the Swan River Colony. He was also assigned duties as Secretary and Clerk of the Legislative Council, Registrar and Colonial Treasurer which made him second in importance to the governor. He was granted 9626 acres at Bassendean and he named his property ‘Coulston’. Ten children were born to the couple by the time Peter died at the age of 49 in 1846.
After his death, Peter Broun’s wife and children left in 1846 for England on the ‘Napoleon’, returning on the ‘John Bagshaw’ in 1848. She then sailed back alone once more to England in 1850. The ship containing their family possessions, the ‘Hindoo’, was lost in a fire, destroying many historical diaries and papers Mrs Broun proposed publishing. The land in Bassendean was sold to cover family commitments.
Peter Broun’s life and achievements were recognised by the placement of a brass plaque in East Perth Cemetery Perth in 1847.
