Police warning to Kep Track trail blazers
The National Trust and the WA Police are urging trail bike riders to act responsibly and not ride on the Kep Track after recent reports that aggressive riders were using the former rail reserve.
Senior Sergeant Gray of the Northam Police and Anne Brake, Interpretation Manager, National Trust of Australia (WA) warned it was illegal to ride trail bikes on the Kep Track which stretches from Mundaring to Northam.
“It is just over two years since two riders crashed into each other with fatal results. It would seem that it is only a matter of time before another tragedy occurs,” Senior Sergeant Gray said.
Built mainly on rail reserve, the Kep Track caters for walkers, cyclists and horses. “It’s important that recreational users can safely use the Kep Track for all the purposes it was intended,” Ms Brake said.
“The Kep Track stretches from Mundaring Weir to Northam and is a popular way for people of all ages to experience the bush and landscape over hundreds of kilometres especially during Summer weather,” she said.
WA Police say they will step up their patrols around these recreation tracks to put a stop to trail bike use in inappropriate locations. “Unfortunately it’s not just teenagers who are riding irresponsibly, adults are also using these trails illegally,” Senior Sergeant Gray said.
“Anyone who sees illegal trail use should contact the Northam Police immediately,” he said.
