Golden Pipeline

The Goldfields Water Supply Scheme was an engineering marvel because of its scale as one of the greatest public works undertaken in the young Australian Nation, a nation becoming known for large scale public works.

The Scheme depended for its success on 8 pumping stations at intervals along the railway route from Mundaring Weir to the Mount Charlotte reservoir in Kalgoorlie. Each station was fitted with large concrete receiving tank to hold water, which flowed, from the previous pumping station and which was then pumped further along the line. The 60,000 pipes were built in Perth from 76,000 tons of steel rolled into halves and connected by a steel locking bar, itself a new Australian invention.

The heritage Place is therefore a ribbon 550km long and about 20 metres wide, with 8 pumping stations, their associated buildings and related infrastructure along its length. Reservoirs, tanks, housing and school buildings and pre-existing human significance add to the heritage interest of individual sites. European history being a relatively recent arrival in the timeline of the Place requires that this project address the indigenous cultural values associated with places related to the project.
