Herdsman Lake Settler's Cottage Heritage Information

Herdsman Lake Settler's Cottage is a rare example in the metropolitan area of basic accommodation for rural settlement. It is the only one remaining of the cottages built on the south west side of Herdsman Lake which formed part of an ambitious government land settlement scheme in the 1930s. It therefore has significant historical and social value as evidence of the working class housing and lifestyles of the 1930s and serves as a reminder of the hardship of that era.

The surrounding environment is significant for its scientific value in relation to the soils, draining and land reclamation of Herdsman Lake.

The cottage was moved from its original position due to the plans for the proposed Stephenson Highway and the necessary widening of Pearson Street. According to the Burra Charter this compromises the heritage integrity of the building but it does not detract from it as a valuable community resource.

Herdsman Lake Settler's Cottage was classified by the National Trust in 1997 and was given to the Trust as part of its historic property portfolio.
