What’s on this week…

What a week! Have you had the chance to check out some of the great events out there? With the Festival in full swing, there are so many opportunities to learn about this great place we call home.

To give you a better idea of what’s on in your area, we’ve created a list of all the events taking place over the next week. Follow the links below to find out more about these events and what’s happening in your area.

Perth

ANZAC Day

This week there are a number of events taking place on ANZAC Day remember those who have served. Come and see a screening of the National Trust’s film, Woodbridge at War. Tickets will be available onsite and screenings are taking place at 11am and 2pm. The National Trust will also be hosting a moving Sunset Service at Peninsula Farm and all are invited to attend.

ANZAC Cottage, that was built in February 1916 to commemorate those who lost their lives at the Gallipoli landing, will be hosting a community day from 3pm.

Central

Explore Perth with the Hooves to Highways look back at a fascinating time when cars first appeared on our roads and discover the fascinating exploration of our Derbarl Yerrigan Swan River. The Royal Perth Hospital Museum will look at the history of medicine in Western Australia while the Perth Cultural Center displays its highly anticipated Desert River Sea: Portraits of the Kimberley exhibition.

The 2019 Western Australian State Heritage and History Conference will be held at the Westin Hotel and will look at the many threats that places, stories and collections face.

National Trust properties are open for free during the festival and this includes East Perth Cemeteries (Sunday’s only) and Peninsula Farm.

North

From humble workers’ cottages to a Spanish Mansion, take a stroll with Richard Offen through Cottesloe and learn about the architectural gems. The Western Australian Card Collectors Society Inc. will be looking at how we got there through a collection of vintage postcards.

Look again Bayswater – Take a stroll back in time down our street, along the shady path to the Swan River, be reminded of our stories as a river community.

Bayswater Historical Society opens its doors and archive with new displays and exhibitions. Enjoy peeking into each room, the garden walk and chatting with our researchers or presenters, reminiscing about lives of the Halliday Family.

See an exhibition showcasing significant stories from Subiaco’s social and commercial history at the pearl shell adornment exhibition.

Have you ever wondered where in the world your family comes from? Learn how to use DNA testing to discover your family’s roots.

Perth author Annegret Hall will talk about her research into the history of the First Fleet Voyage and her book that looks at this period through the eyes of the convicts.

South

Wireless Hill Sound & Vision Open Day will be bringing together a new exhibition: The Picture Palaces of Perth and Sonic Hill, a site specific art installation, to celebrate the history of sound and vision in Western Australia

Hop on a free bus tour to see local historic sites around Canning. Take the time to wander through Belmont’s past from the eerie Dead Man’s Gully to the bubbling waterside trails of the Swan River.

See Canning through a lens through the display of historic images from the City of Canning local history photograph collection.

View Canning’s history at this delightful 1870s historic Woodloes Homestead with a guided tour, explore the stalls and demonstrations at a variety of stands

The Rockingham Central Library is delighted to welcome the WA Inspired Art Quilters and their collection of quilts for a month long exhibition that have been created to recognise the importance of the wetlands to Aboriginal people. Travel through time, experiencing popular wedding trends from the early 1900s to 2000, with our beautiful collection of Wedding Gowns with weddings through time.

Enjoy an exhibition that explores how May’s illustrations continue to connect us to our bountiful bush. Learn about our History on the Airwaves will be presented by Capital Radio.

Take a step back in time & wander through the Homestead’s 12 rooms, experiencing how it was to live a century ago at the Azelia Ley Museum.

The City of Canning would be recognising and thanking its pioneers at the Pioneers Tea.

East

Woodbridge is open for free and this weekend there is the special event Roses of Woodbridge. You can also enjoy free entry to No. 1 Pump Station over the weekend.

Get behind the scenes of Revolutions Transport Museum and discover items found in the collection store room and discover more of Whiteman Park at their Heritage Open Day where you can take tours, explore the transport and print workshops, and watch fascinating demonstrations.

Immerse yourself in the early history of Bassendean and discover Guildford as you walk in the footsteps of pioneers.

Explore Kalamunda’s first heritage listed building and explore Kalamunda’s History Village. Head to Whiteman Park to take the Collector Card Trail.

Fremantle

Dive deeper and explore the undercurrents that created the fishing industry in Freo at Fish Guts and All – The Return. Put on your walking shoes to explore the Life of the Harbour (Fremantle Port).

Enjoy the rich folklore and stories of our port city’s convict history, as one of Fremantle Prison’s experienced Tour Guides takes you for a walk in the shoes of the convicts. Watch a one hour silent film documenting the 8,000 mile voyage from Italy to Australia on a voyage that sparked generations.

 

Regional – South & Peel

Once again the atmosphere at the Princess Royal Fortress will ring out with the explosion of gunfire to commemorate Albany’s unique military heritage.

Join us for a fun and free day at Strawberry Hill at Family Fun at the Farm!

Come and learn about our States Transport and Trades from the old horse-drawn cart through to the historic railway vehicles and then cars. See displays of clothing prior to 1950 at Clothes of the Closet and watch the documentary that looks at the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company closure and reflections on what became a defining moment in history.

Wander through the lovely gardens at the old Blythewood (Pinjarra) homestead overlooking the Murray River. Visit Ellensbrook (Margaret River) to learn about the amazing women who played a major role in the development and management of the place. Discover the charm of Strawberry Hill (Albany) and receive free entry during the festival weekends. Experience the sense of isolation, danger and struggles faced by the Layman family at Wonnerup.

 

Regional – Wheatbelt

This week it is all about tours in York and what better way to start than with a Spooky tour of York. This will be followed by Mike Bryant’s intriguing story of country policing from the days of the first convicts to the late twentieth century.

Swag Fest is your opportunity to listen to the storytelling of Australian bush poetry, watch the shearer at work as he struggles to control the wriggling sheep and try your hand at throwing horseshoes.

Buttons and Bones – York Convicts continues this week and looks at the convicts stationed at York Convict Depot in a fascinating new display that draws upon recent archaeological excavations. View a selection of works painted by local artists at York’s Art for Anzacs.

Take advantage of the Free Entry Weekends at the National Trust properties at Mangowine (Nungarin) and York Courthouse complex.

Regional – North & East

Enjoy free entry to Central Greenough (Greenough) and Warden Finnerty’s residence (Coolgardie) over the weekends of the festival.
