Infrastructure, innovation and a sustainable future for WA.

The National Trust of Western Australia commemorates the significant contribution CY O’Connor’s legacy has made to the state and nation with an annual lecture marking the anniversary of his death – 10 March.

2023 is a special anniversary year for O’Connor’s Goldfields Water Supply Scheme pipeline, colloquially known as the Golden or Goldfields Pipeline, marking 120 years of service. In recognition of this remarkable feat of engineering, the 2023 lecture will be delivered on Friday 10 March by Nicole Lockwood, Chairperson of Infrastructure WA.

“Nicole is uniquely placed to provide insights into the challenges and opportunities for infrastructure in our state in the 21st century,” said Julian Donaldson, National Trust of Western Australia CEO.

“Thanks to her role with Infrastructure WA, wide experience on boards, including Water Corporation, and a focus on the future of key areas such as Fremantle Port, Nicole brings an understanding of infrastructure that extends beyond political timeframes – much like O’Connor himself.”

Nicole was appointed as Chairperson of Infrastructure WA in October 2021 and is passionate about the creation of engaged and thriving cities. With a background in law and regional economic development, she works with Government and the private sector to develop long-term infrastructure plans to secure the future prosperity and liveability of our cities and regions. Nicole has also recently been appointed as the Strategic Advisor to the Future of Fremantle Planning Committee charged with re-imagining the port precinct beyond its industrial life.

Pat Donovan, Water Corporation CEO, said, “In this 120th anniversary year of the Golden Pipeline, we are delighted to be celebrating O’Connor’s incredible engineering legacy. The pipeline underpinned the economic development of the State and is testament to O’Connor and the generations of Water Corporation employees who have carefully ensured its continuous operation.”

“The CY O’Connor Lecture series has generously been sponsored by Water Corporation for many years with a partnership going back to 2004,” said Mr Donaldson. “This year we’re again pleased to also acknowledge the support of our host, the Western Australia Museum.”

Water Corporation is a partner of the Foundation for the WA Museum and has established an interactive experience highlighting how water and climate have played a key role in creating WA’s unique environment. Featuring a section of the Golden Pipeline, the display can be seen at WA Museum Boola Bardip.

The 2023 CY O’Connor Lecture will be held at the NWS Shipping Theatre, WA Maritime Museum. Doors open at 5.30 pm for a 5.45 pm start and light refreshments will be served after the lecture.
