The Thomas Peel Archaeological site, located within the Beeliar Regional Park in Henderson, is one of Western Australia’s earliest known European settlement sites that is south of Perth, and is considered a rare example of settlement during the earliest phase of the Swan River Colony. The camp was home to around 500 men, women and children and was established in December 1829. It was dissolved in November 1830 as the majority of those that had set up there moved to other areas seeking better opportunities.

Purpose of the Appeal

Research that has occurred since 2007 involves the careful excavation of structures occupied by the people and the disposal pits of their rubbish. The artefacts give clues about the lives of the first Europeans to colonise the west coast of Australia. Excavation and analysis are costly, requiring surveying and excavation equipment that wear out needing replacing and disposables such as plastic sample bags and archival boxes so that the many artefacts excavated over the years are projected and available for research in the years to come. The research also needs expensive equipment such as a magnetometer to find other sites in the overall Peel town site complex and an electron microscope that assists in the careful analysis of artefacts.
