Jellyfish can elicit strong emotions. While at times fear and loathing, more often these ancient creatures inspire fascination, protection and even the composition of original music. Jellyfish have the potential to transcend the physical and provide a metaphor for life, allowing us to go in our own direction and still move with the tide. During 2015, as an Artistic Outreach Associate with the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions (1100-1800), National Trust Interpretation Officer Gina Pickering explored the emotional connections between Perth’s community and the Jellyfish of the Swan and Canning Rivers.
