Professor John Stephens, Mr Geoff Ashley and the Hon Bill Marmion MLA, speak at the formal launch of the National Trust (WA) commissioned Godden McKay Logan report on the the cultural heritage values of the Wedge & Grey Beach Shack Communities in Western Australia.The National Trust of Australia has found the shack settlements of Wedge and Grey meets three ‘nature of significance’ criteria for entry into the Western Australian Register of Heritage Places; aesthetic, historic and social, as well as two ‘degree of significance’ criteria; rarity and representative. The settlements at Wedge include approximately 320 shacks that were constructed between the late 1950s and the early 1990s by fisherman and pastoralists, and later by residents of Perth for weekend and holidays use. Grey is located a further 20 kilometres north of Wedge and includes approximately 120 shacks with a similar construction and use history to Wedge.
